UNDER SALT MARSH

This moody, slow burn crime drama leans heavily into its wow factor landscapes. The fictional Welsh coastal town of Morfa Halen, constantly battered by floods and relentless waves, feels a little overplayed, but it does help build urgency and tension as the investigation unfolds. Former detective turned teacher Jackie Ellis (Kelly Reilly), brings an unblinking stare that can be distracting at times, though she does convincingly carry her detective instincts into the role wearing some excellent knits. Jackie’s evolving connection with lead detective Eric Bull (Rafe Spall) adds depth and layers to long buried unsolved murders, although Bull’s backstory feels somewhat misplaced and underdeveloped. The final reveal was pretty good and I was engaged until the end, without feeling the need to fast forward. A solid watch.
